This year's MET Gala celebration of "Black Dandies" showcased a fashion legacy that transcends borders, connecting Black style icons from Harlem to the African continent in a powerful display of cultural continuity.
While the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" exhibition highlighted how Black dandyism emerged as "sartorial activism that threads self-worth, rebellion, and creativity into every seam," we must remember that this elegant rebellion finds expression throughout the Black diaspora.
The Congolese Sapeurs—members of the "Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes" (Society of Entertainers and Elegant People)—exemplify this global conversation in style. Though popularized by Papa Wemba in the 1970s, the Sapeur movement's roots reach back to a profound act of resistance: a colorful, flamboyant rejection of colonial power through the very clothes that symbolized it.
As Monica L. Miller, curator of the MET exhibition, reminds us, dandyism emerges from the tension between "race, gender, class and masculinity." For both Harlem's sharp-dressed Renaissance figures and Kinshasa's vibrant Sapeurs, meticulous attention to tailoring became a declaration of humanity in environments designed to deny it.
The Sapeurs transformed European fashion codes into something uniquely African, creating an aesthetic that parallels how figures like William Lee, George Washington's valet, found "subtle ways to showcase personal style... transforming a symbol of oppression into a canvas of self-expression."
Superfine is a story about all of us.
The 2025 MET Gala marks a watershed moment—the first time the Metropolitan Museum will present a fashion exhibition solely featuring designers of color. This historic recognition affirms what we've always known: Black style isn't merely influential; it's foundational to global fashion.
As we celebrate this momentous exhibition, LOVE DOT honors the full spectrum of Black dandyism across continents and centuries. From the Harlem Renaissance to the streets of Brazzaville, the Black dandy represents an unbroken creative lineage—one that continues to demonstrate how style can serve as both political statement and artistic expression.
