Each length is its own, which is why the pattern on yours will not be the pattern on hers — the variation is the beauty of the design, not a flaw.
Carrie is my middle name
It is the name given at the counter when I do not feel like spelling Ńnèká for someone I will never see again. Most women I know have a version of this — a name they hand over to make the moment go faster.
It was my great-aunt's name first. She was the first entrepreneur in the family. At a time when a woman running a business was an argument she had to win every morning before she could open the door.
I did not set out to name a dress
after her, nor myself. We finished this one, looked at it on the form, and there she was.
A White Dress
...but make it batik.
The Carrie is the first time we have let the batik take a backseat in the design.
It runs the placket. It opens through the skirt. It shows below the hem, half a second after you have already walked past. The white cotton carries the silhouette of the dress — the collar, the seaming, the shape that holds you upright in a room where you are being assessed.
Restraint is not the absence of a point of view. It is what you earn once you have one.

Sharp, deliberate, a little severe.
It sets the tone before you have said anything.
The Cuff.
It flares wide at the wrist. You will
notice it when you are talking with your hands, which, if this dress is for you, is most of the time.
The Hem.
Uneven over the batik underlayer, so
the color arrives a moment after you do.
